Art
at the High Coast World Heritage
Open Art Competition

080526
In Västernorrland
and at Höga Kusten [The High Coast] there have been many interesting
projects where artists have made works in different contexts. Now, the
project called Art at the World Heritage has started and proceeds at a
larger scale with the landscape and the world heritage as points of departure.
For a long time, the dramatic scenery of the High Coast has inspired artists,
and this is described in the book about the High Coast World Heritage.
The landscape has become a world heritage thanks to its unique uplift
geology and exciting geological formations such as till-capped hills,
shingle fields, caves, etc. It is also a cultural landscape with hidden
secrets related to the land uplift.
Competition programme: open art competition
The
parties behind Art at the World Heritage are now realising an art competition.
Artists are invited to send in their letters of interest. Out of those
entries, six artists are selected and assigned to outline sketches as
proposals for art at the High Coast landscape. From the six proposals,
two artists are then selected to complete their proposed works of art.
Instructions
and procedure
First, artists are invited to send in a letter stating that they are interested
in participating. The letter of interest should include the following:
- Reference material from previous works (pictures, etc.)
- List of qualifications (CV)
- Motivation why you want to work in the High Coast World Heritage
From the
artists who have announced their interests in this way, six individuals
are then selected, and they are assigned to make sketch proposals for
works of art in the High Coast World Heritage area. The different stages
of the selection process will be performed by a jury whose members are
appointed by the project financiers. The project will be documented and
marketed nationally and internationally in seminars, conferences and in
published material about the development of the works of art.
The
jury
The jury is composed of Elna Svenle (Wanås), Jörgen Nilsson
(The National Public Art Council Sweden), Mats Henriksson (The County
Administrative Board of Västernorrland), Kicki Hammarström (The
County Council of Västernorrland), Janne Björkman (the municipality
of Kramfors) and Daniel Wetterskog (the municipality of Örnsköldsvik).
In the first round, they select six artists for sketch assignments at
SEK 30,000 each. The second round in the jury’s work will take place
in the beginning of November when two artists are selected to complete
their respective works of art.
Expectations
All
artistic strategies and modes of expression will be observed, and we welcome
ideas which challenge traditional forms for expression. The following
criteria will be applied in the assessment (no prioritised order intended):
- idea and concept
- artistic value
- attitude to the place and the scenic values in the High Coast World
Heritage
- economy
- feasibility
- durability, permanence, security, maintenance
At www.highcoast.net,
the High Coast World Heritage area is presented, and here at VOLYM you
will be able to follow the development of the project.
Letter
of interest
A letter announcing an interest in participation should reach the project
no later than August 1, 2008. Artists who will be selected for sketch
assignments will also be invited to participate in a guided tour where
the High Coast is shown as well as some suggested locations. This tour
will take place during two days in week 35, August 25 to 31, 2008. Then,
the artists will be asked to outline their proposals for Art at the High
Coast World Heritage area.
Costs
for execution
A budget frame of SEK 1,500,000 divided between two works of art, from
the jury’s assessment, constitutes the total financing. In the sum
are included production costs, foundations and artist fees
Form
for competition
The competition is open to professional artists, nationally and internationally.
Sketch
assignments
The
artists selected for sketch assignments will be notified on August 15,
2008, at the latest, and delivery date for sketches is October 31, 2008.
The works of art should then be completed during 2009.
Locational
delimitations
Some suggested locations are in a nature reserve, which may delimit the
execution of the work of art.
The
competition proposal
Sketches according to scale should be delivered on one or two cardboards,
size A2.
Materials samples and detail samples on the scale of 1:1
Sketch description including motto
Complete survey of costs, including costs for the execution and the production
of the work of art as well as the artist fee. A more detailed description
will be sent to the six participating artists.

The project will be advertised in national media in the Nordic countries,
in web-based art magazines as well as through artists’ organisations
and networks.
The
art competition is financed by The National Public Arts Council of Sweden,
Regional development / The County Council of Västernorrland, The
County Administrative Board of Västernorrland, the municipality of
